This recording features some of the most notable works in the repertoire for bassoon and piano, here played by Per Hannisdal (Principal Bassoon, Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra) and pianist Vebjørn Anvik (Grieg Trio), two of Norway's finest musicians. Most of the pieces were composed in the first half of the 20th century, which was a fruitful time for music for wind instruments, especially in France where the Paris Conservatoire commissioned works (pièces de concours) to be used in examinations. These were often works of high quality and they constitute a significant addition to the repertoire. Two of them, Henri Dutilleux's Sarabande et Cortège and Alexandre Tansma's Sonatine, are represented in this album, which also features music composed by Paul Hindemith, Camille Saint-Saëns, Edward Elgar, Charles Koechlin and Johan Kvandal.
